Gorge Walking

hell gill jumpFor our gorge walking sessions we use one of three different gorges in the local area, each with a very different nature and suitable for different abilities.

Each gorge involves going up or down through the gorge in the water, tackling whatever obstacles lay in the way, be it a deep pool, a waterfall or just difficult terrain.

Mill Gill, running right past the centre, is our most popular gorge walk. The start of the gorge is just a five minute drive from Low Mill, followed by a five minute walk. This gorge is very flexible in the way that it can be used, and is appropriate for both primary school groups and adult groups alike. In the gorge there are several waterfalls, each with easy and harder routes up them, as well as deep pools (with shallower short-cuts!) and small caves.

hell gill group Arn Gill, a smaller gorge five minutes from Low Mill, is suitable for disabled groups, with very easy access, grassy river banks and shallow water. During periods of high water levels in Wensleydale, Arn Gill can often still be used, and the waterfalls at the top of the gill can be tackled.

Our third and most notorious gorge walk is Hell Gill. This gorge is 20 minutes drive from Low Mill, followed by a ten minute walk. The photos on this page are of Hell Gill, and as you can see, the gorge is very deep and narrow. Only older groups tackle Hell Gill because of its committing nature. Hell Gill also involves a 6 foot jump into a deep pool that must be jumped to complete the gorge, the highlight of every Hell Gill trip!
